The Accountant role which resides at the Pike Block Building 115 west Fayette Street, Syracuse, New York contributes to the financial wellbeing of CenterState CEO, its subsidiaries and affiliates.  Responsibilities include performing a variety of accounting functions, monitoring financial controls, ensuring adherence to policies and procedures, preparing reports, and achieving fiscal accuracy/timeliness. Processing of bi-weekly payroll and providing outstanding customer service to CenterState CEO employees.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: (Additional duties may be assigned)

  • Perform specific accounting functions, including but not limited to:
    • Accounts Receivable –
      • Maintain a Sage 100 billing system that serves multiple affiliated entities.
      • Generate and send out invoices; follow, collect and allocate payments according to specific deadlines.
      • Post receipts and initiate cash transfers, post interim and monthly journal entries as assigned to maintain accurate general ledger.
      • Prepare and ensure timely bank deposits.
      • Investigate and resolve member/client queries and originate required adjustments.
      • Manage the reporting and collection of aged receivables.
    • Accounts Payable –
      • Process vendor invoices for payment. Code, verify and electronically enter accounts payable data into ledgers and post to vendor statements ensuring accuracy of general ledger coding and cash disbursements.
      • Follow up on account statements and other discrepancies regarding payment of accounts and serve as liaison between departments and vendors in the resolution of administrative problems and inquiries.
      • Prepare and process bank transfers and ACH’s
    • General Ledger –
      • Monthly closing and reporting for affiliates as assigned
      • Timely completion of bank and ledger reconciliations as assigned.
    • Payroll
      • Responsible for all facets of bi-weekly payroll, including processing and ledger posting.
      • Ensure accurate recording of paid time off for all employees, including keeping totals of time due.
      • Liaison with payroll provider, ensuring effective and efficient utilization of appropriate payroll modules.
      • Quickly and accurately respond to employee payroll questions.
  • Serve as backup to other roles in department.
    • Ability to demonstrate flexibility.
    • Support year-end audit processes for several entities.
    • Follow internal financial controls to assure fiscal accountability and accuracy.
  • Support the preparation and completion of monthly, quarterly, and year-end processes within the finance department.
    • Complete all documentation and reports required for funding source compliance. 
    • Keep abreast of all company policies, procedures and accounting and finance systems to provide assistance to staff and backup coverage.
    • Strictly uphold confidentiality of members, employees, and company business inside and outside the company.
    • Other accounting and finance functions as assigned.

Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field. Additional years of experience at a ratio of 2:1 may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree.
  • A minimum of 5-10 years of general accounting experience required of which include 2-3 years of payroll experience preferred.
  • Paylocity experience desirable.
  • Sage 100 and Salesforce experience desirable

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of general bookkeeping and accounting principles.
  • Proficiency in Excel.
  • Computer proficiency including word processing, data entry, and generating reports using standard software applications. Sage 100 experience preferred.
  • Ability to communicate verbally clearly and concisely and in writing.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. 
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one small group situations to clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to perform intermediate mathematics, such as computing interest, proportions and percentages. 
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Excellent attention to detail.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. but can be flexible as agreed to by portfolio leads.


No travel is expected for this position. 

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Close mental and visual attention required to perform work dealing primarily with preparing and analyzing data and figures, performing detailed accounting work, using a computer terminal for research, and/or extensive reading. 
  • General office equipment is used.

Work Environment:

There is no exposure to adverse environmental conditions.  Work is performed in a typical office environment.
