Syracuse Surge Communications Manager (part-time, temporary)

The part-time temporary, Syracuse Surge Communications Manager will work collaboratively with a committee of partners, including City and CenterState CEO staff members, to co-plan, implement and execute a strategic communications plan to support these initiatives. In this role, the Syracuse Surge Communications Manager will manage partners and contractors to generate content, produce collateral and deploy earned media efforts to increase public understanding and access to the initiatives and increase relevance through news and other communication channels, including web, social media, email marketing, print publications and marketing collateral, video and broadcast, and advertising.

CenterState CEO is working with the City of Syracuse to improve the visibility and prominence of the Syracuse Surge and Syracuse Build initiatives.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage subcontractors, partner creative agencies or in-house design teams to oversee the development and execution of campaign vision and goals.
  • Manage social and digital media communications, digital newsletters and other digital channels; manage digital asset library and archives.
  • Develop and execute strategic communications plans aligned with business and brand needs and goals. Lead development and creative execution for assigned initiatives.
  • Identify campaign goals and define and track metrics and results for multiple projects to provide measurable success.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills to engage and influence all levels of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate strategic thinking and sound judgment with a focus on impact and an ability to work effectively and succeed in a fast-paced working environment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of marketing and branding best practices to ensure consistency of across communications.
  • Analyze and make recommendations on the overall customer experience for community initiatives.
  • Ensure consistency and continuous improvement of all messages and message approval processes.
  • Create communication collateral materials, as necessary.

Minimum Education and Experience: 

Bachelor's degree plus 2-4 years of experience in communications, journalism, marketing, advertising, or related field is strongly preferred. Years of experience at a ratio of 2:1 may be considered in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Some graphic design experience.
  • Proficiency with Facebook, Instagram and other social media, and MS Office
  • Adobe Creative Suite desirable.
  • Have strong knowledge or willingness to learn multimedia tools for video and audio production as well as print and design. Familiarity with Office 365 a plus.
  • Understand local media and stakeholder landscape.
  • Work well in a diverse environment.
  • Be an enthusiastic self-starter with well-developed administrative, organizational and self-management skills.
  • This role will work with initiatives at the intersection of economic development, business development, technology and construction industries. Proficiency in these industries is not required, but a plus. The ideal candidate will have a willingness to learn about these sectors as they relate to the Syracuse Surge initiative.
  • Ability to listen to, understand and follow directions in English.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  None

Special Requirements: Valid driver’s license.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Close mental and visual attention required to perform work, verbal communication, using a computer terminal, and/or extensive reading.
  • General office equipment is used.
  • Must have some physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas for events.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 pounds and push and/or pull up to 20-pound loads at a time relative to event-based equipment. 

Work Environment:

  • There is no exposure to known adverse environmental conditions.  Work is performed in a typical office work environment with outside travel.
  • Please note: due to current pandemic the work environment may be temporarily remote.
