Syracuse, NY – Next month Fleet Feet Sports, Syracuse will partner with the Downtown Committee of Syracuse, Inc. to kick off the first of its series of community runs this spring and summer. Fleet Feet Sports invites runners to lace up their sneakers and join them at the trailhead of the Creekwalk near the Museum of Science and Technology and The Sound Garden for a group run on Saturday morning, April 1 at 9:45 am. The #ThisIsOurTown Community Run Kick-Off will step off at 10:00 am, and follow the Creekwalk, which runs adjacent to Armory Square in Downtown Syracuse through Franklin Square.

The run is open to all ages, paces, abilities and groups. It is free, but those who are interested in participating are encouraged to register and sign a waiver by visiting Fleet Feet Sports’ website. Building on momentum generated from the Downtown Committee’s new advertising campaign introduced this past fall, Fleet Feet Sports invites runners to post about the run - and take pictures, safely – on their social media accounts, using the hashtags, #ThisIsOurTown and #3run5 (as a nod to the “315 area code”).

This is the first run in Fleet Feet Sports’ series of spring and summer community runs built around the idea of exploring Syracuse and Central New York. A full schedule of the season will be posted to the Fleet Feet Sports, Syracuse website soon.

“By starting our run in Downtown Syracuse, a symbol of strength in our community, we invite participants to come out for a fun morning of running and officially make the claim, that ‘This Is Our Town!’” said Ed Griffin, Co-Owner of Fleet Feet Sports, Syracuse. “The #ThisIsOurTown Community Run Series aligns with Fleet Feet Sports’ ongoing mission to be a positive force in the Syracuse community by providing a memorable experience as we promote healthy lifestyles. Running together, through our neighborhoods, empowers our community to get out with friends and get moving. We are ready to have a lot of fun!”
“We are thrilled that Fleet Feet Sports chose Downtown Syracuse as a launch pad for its #ThisIsOurTown Community Run Series,” said Merike Treier, executive director of the Downtown Committee. “Fitness and exercise are important priorities for many of our Downtown residents and employees, and we hope that when these folks - and new visitors - run, walk or play through Downtown, that they’re also taking in Downtown’s diverse array of visual and cultural offerings, and finding new inspiration to engage in their surroundings.”

In August 2016, the Downtown Committee partnered with Excellus BlueCross BlueShield and the City of Syracuse to install Downtown’s first free outdoor fitness park at the Trailhead of the Creekwalk. The outdoor fitness park features three pieces of exercise equipment – Parallel Bars, Ab Crunch/Leg Lift and Tai Chi Wheels – which are accessible to all ages and abilities, and free to use.

The Onondaga Creekwalk is a 2.6 mile trail, which starts in historic Armory Square and connects to the southern shore of Onondaga Lake. It was completed in the summer of 2011, and plans are underway to expand it further. More information about the Creekwalk can be found here.
