The Syracuse metro area continued its position as a leading place in New York State for job growth in 2025, adding 3,200 jobs in the past month and 7,400 jobs compared to the same period last year. This growth was primarily driven by private-sector hiring, particularly in the leisure and hospitality, professional services, and retail sectors. Construction also showed notable gains, while manufacturing and private education sectors had some setbacks. Government employment remained steady overall, but there was a noticeable decline in state government jobs.
Key Takeaways:
- Leisure and Hospitality led all sectors, adding 1,300 jobs month-over-month and achieving 8.4% year-over-year growth.
- Construction employment increased by 2.9% over the month, continuing its strong performance for the year.
- Professional and Business Services added 900 jobs, resulting in a 4.0% increase year-over-year.
- Manufacturing declined by 2.0% year-over-year, despite a modest monthly gain.
- Private Education lost 1,100 jobs in the month, marking a 6.4% decrease.
