CNY Diaper Bank hosts eighth annual “Make a Mother’s Day” Diaper Drive

Community members encouraged to donate to help wipe out diaper need

LIVERPOOL, N.Y. – The CNY Diaper Bank is encouraging community members, businesses and organizations to participate in its eighth annual “Make a Mother’s Day” Diaper Drive this May. All funds raised will go directly toward diaper purchases to support local families in need. To double the impact, donations will be matched up to $10,000, thanks to a grant awarded by The John Ben Snow Foundation & Memorial Trust.

“Diaper need is a silent crisis that affects millions of families across the country. This ongoing hardship takes a tremendous mental toll on mothers and guardians who only want to take care of their babies,” said Michela Hugo, founder of the CNY Diaper Bank. “Donating to the CNY Diaper Bank this Mother’s Day can help provide peace of mind to mothers by supplying them with the essentials they need to take care of their children. It can also be a meaningful way to honor a special ‘mom’ in your life.”

This Mother’s Day, the CNY Diaper Bank asks for the support of individuals, local groups and businesses to ensure it can continue to provide diapers to local families experiencing financial crises. The organization’s goal is to collect 50,000 diapers throughout the month of May. Community members can support the “Make a Mother’s Day” Diaper Drive by:

●        Making a monetary donation at cnydiaperbank.org. The CNY Diaper Bank uses donations to purchase diapers in bulk for an average cost of just 13 cents per diaper compared with more than 25-35 cents at retail price.

●        Donating diapers and other supplies at designated collection points. To view a complete list of drop-off locations, visit cnydiaperbank.org/donate-diapers. For the lowest price on diapers, individuals can shop Walmart’s Registry for Good. Diapers purchased online through the registry will be delivered directly to the CNY Diaper Bank.

●        Hosting a diaper drive at their workplace, church or school or in their own neighborhood. Contact info@cnydiaperbank.org for a personalized flyer and fundraising link for maximum success.

Businesses can also support the “Make a Mother’s Day” Diaper Drive by hosting an employer match campaign, agreeing to match all of their employees’ donations to the CNY Diaper Bank for the month.

The CNY Diaper Bank currently works with 49 partner agencies in the area to distribute an average of 150,000 diapers to 3,000 local babies and toddlers each month. The CNY Diaper Bank has distributed more than 8 million diapers since its inception, including over 600,000 in 2023 alone.

The volunteer-run nonprofit was founded in May 2016 after local mother Michela Hugo learned that agencies in the area were forced to turn away families in need of diapers. Hugo used the support and guidance of the National Diaper Bank Network to start a diaper bank in Syracuse. Though diapers are an essential need for babies, they are not covered by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or by Women, Infants and Children (WIC) benefits. Since an adequate supply of diapers for a single child can cost $100 per month, diapers become an expense many families can’t afford.
