Friends of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo to Host ‘Zoo Run Run’ 5K on April 6

Posted on February 10, 2025

Calling all runners, walkers, and animal-lovers! The Friends of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo will host a 5K run throughout zoo grounds on Sunday, April 6, 2025. The event begins at 7 a.m. when the first wave embarks on their journey around the zoo’s vibrant Wildlife Trail five times. After three waves of runners complete their races, children will line up to compete in the “Lamb Loop” 1K fun run, followed by the final wave of walkers. For those unable to attend Zoo Run Run in person, there is also a virtual participation option. Whether you run like a tiger, stroll like a sloth, or cheer like a crane, you can make a difference and have “wild” amounts of fun. All funds raised through the Zoo Run Run benefit the mission of the Friends of the Zoo, which is to enable the Rosamond Gifford Zoo to provide exceptional animal care and unparalleled conservation education in Central New York and beyond.

The zoo encourages guests to register now so they can begin fundraising in anticipation of the event. Participants can fundraise individually or maximize their impact by forming teams. Top fundraising teams and individuals will earn exclusive zoo merch, unique animal experiences, and other great rewards! The more funds you raise, the more prizes available from which to choose, and the more support you provide for wildlife conservation. All registrants will receive complimentary admission to the zoo, finisher’s medals, and post-race water and snacks.

“We’re excited to welcome participants to this year’s Zoo Run Run, where runners and walkers will not only enjoy a fun and active morning but also help enrich the lives of our animals in real time!” says Carrie Large, Executive Director of the Friends of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. “As you make your way through the course, you’ll be providing sights, sounds, and energy that stimulate our animals, creating a unique and engaging experience for them. Plus, every registration directly supports their care and enrichment. Join us for a morning of fitness, fun, and meaningful impact at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo!” All ages and abilities are invited to participate.

Because Zoo Run Run takes place in the morning, participants have the unique opportunity to observe zoo animals’ morning routines while enjoying their run. (Animals will be observing runners, too!) After the final wave, registrants are welcome to enjoy the zoo. For many species, morning is their most active time of the day, so the fun continues even after the race is done.

Zoo Run Run wave start time schedule is as follows:

Wave 1: (7am) I can run a 5k in 35 minutes or less. Wave 2: (7:40am) I can run a 5k in 40 minutes or less. Wave 3: (8:30am) I can run a 5k in 45 minutes or less.

One Lap (1K) Youth Run: (9:20am) Youth ages 7 and under Wave 4: (9:35am) I am planning to walk or bring a stroller
