NBT Bank Volunteers to Build Home with Syracuse Habitat For Humanity

SYRACUSE, NY (March 12, 2024) – In late January, a group of NBT Bank employees spent the day volunteering with Syracuse Habitat for Humanity.

The NBT team used their strength and skill to help construct a new Habitat home, hauling materials, hammering nails and installing insulation to construct the frame of the house.

“It's incredibly rewarding to collaborate as a team and contribute to something bigger than ourselves,” said David Kavney, NBT Bank Regional President. “Community involvement is one of NBT’s core values, and our team embraces opportunities to extend a helping hand to local organizations like Habitat for Humanity that provide critical services and support to our communities.”

In addition to volunteering, NBT contributed $5,000 to sponsor Syracuse Habitat for Humanity’s first Banking for Builds fundraising initiative. The program is a collaboration between Central New York financial institutions and Syracuse Habitat for Humanity with the mission to build a new home that was previously delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are so thankful for the support shown by the NBT team. Their involvement in the construction of a new Habitat home demonstrates the power of community collaboration and the impact it can have on the lives of those in our program,” said Sarah Bruce, Executive Director of Syracuse Habitat for Humanity. “We are also incredibly grateful to have the support of NBT Bank on our Banking for Builds fundraiser; their support helps us fulfill our mission by making home ownership dreams come true for community members like Anaseia, and by getting us one house closer to our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.”

Syracuse Habitat for Humanity, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, is a nonprofit organization that builds simple, decent, and affordable homes in partnership with qualified low-income homebuyers in Onondaga County. Working with people from all backgrounds, the organization aims to provide affordable homeownership opportunities for people in need by building and renovating houses, with the overarching goal of ensuring adequate housing where individuals can live and grow.

NBT Bank has over 150 banking locations in the Northeast, including nearly 90 in Onondaga County. NBT serves Syracuse, as well as the surrounding communities of Camillus, North Syracuse, East Syracuse, Brewerton, Fayetteville, Baldwinsville and Manlius in Onondaga County.
