SOS Announces Medicare has Approved Coverage for Outpatient Hip Replacements Performed at Freestanding Surgical Centers

Posted on December 17, 2020

East Syracuse, NY – Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists (SOS) is pleased to announce Medicare has recently approved coverage of total hip replacements performed as an outpatient procedure at freestanding surgical centers beginning January 1, 2021. This approval allows Medicare patients the option of having hip replacements performed at SOS’ Specialists’ One-Day Surgery Center (SODS).

“We believe that eligible patients should have a choice of where to have their hip replacements performed,” commented Dr. Brett Greenky, president of SOS. “Since SOS surgeons began these procedures at SODS, we know many patients prefer to be able to recover in the comfort of their own home. Particularly in these times of public health concerns we are pleased that some patients with Medicare can now make the choice to have a hip replacement performed at SODS which only treats patients for elective musculoskeletal and joint procedures.”

The SOS research department, which collects data for both internal and external resources, has tracked the outcomes of hip replacement patients having their procedure at SODS and found statistically significant successes during the 2018 – 2020 time period including:

•Six weeks after surgery, 95% of patients have decreased pain.

•One year after surgery, 98% of patients have improved functionality and less pain.

•At four weeks after their surgery:

o94% of patients are walking without a walker or crutches.

o87% are driving a car.

o63% have returned to former exercise programs.

SODS is a locally owned ambulatory surgery center that provides safe, convenient and affordable same day surgery for patients. The model surgical facility boasts a professional, caring staff and a comfortable atmosphere, which puts patients and their loved ones at ease. With new technologies and more efficient procedures, certain surgeries can now be successfully completed at the SODS and the patient can return to the comfort of their own home and bed to recover that day. Medicare or other patients wishing to discuss the option of a hips replacement at SODS should contact their physician or call 315-251-3100.
