ITHACA, NY (May 6, 2024) — Demonstrating its commitment to nurturing internal talent, Tompkins Financial Corporation (Tompkins) has announced the promotions of Thomas Cannon and Michelle Harlan. Cannon, elevated from his position as branch manager, has been appointed to wealth advisor, joining Tompkins Financial Advisors’ Central New York wealth management team. Harlan, previously an assistant branch manager, will succeed Cannon as branch manager of Tompkins Community Bank’s Plaza Branch in Ithaca, New York.
After joining Tompkins as a teller in 2018, Cannon quickly proved his banking expertise and leadership abilities, enabling him to advance through multiple positions at Tompkins Community Bank. As a wealth advisor with Tompkins Financial Advisors, Cannon will build and maintain client relationships, developing holistic financial plans that align with the client’s goals to achieve financial independence. Cannon holds a bachelor's degree in pre-counseling from Moody Bible Institute and is currently working toward an MBA with a concentration in finance from Post University. He is a board member of Cortland Loaves and Fishes and currently resides in Cortland, New York with his wife and two daughters.
“Thomas’s journey at Tompkins over the past six years has been nothing short of inspiring,” said Jennifer Green, senior vice president and managing director of Tompkins Financial Advisors’ Central New York Region. “He has consistently shown dedication and drive, and his integrity, strategic mindset, and ability to inspire others make him the perfect fit for this new role.”
Harlan, a 16-year veteran of the banking and financial industry, will now oversee Tompkins’ Plaza Branch, working to nurture relationships, and ensuring all client and employee needs are met. A resident of Groton, New York, Harlan has been a volunteer with Cortland County’s SPCA since 2019.
“Michelle’s promotion signifies not only her exceptional dedication to Tompkins’ clients but her ability to act as a role model for her peers at the Plaza Branch,” said Brandy Besemer, vice president and community banking regional manager. “Throughout her time with Tompkins, Michelle has consistently demonstrated a deep understanding of our customers’ needs and a passion for delivering top-tier service. Her transition to branch manager is a testament to her unwavering commitment to excellence. I have full confidence in her ability to lead our team to greater success and service for clients.”
