This feature of the CEO Insights monthly newsletter spotlights Members and Clients that are “Economic Champions” because of their success in adding jobs; expanding their products or services; advancing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives; gaining state or national recognition, or contributing to the success of the region through their growth.

NAMI Syracuse (National Alliance on Mental Illness) strives to better the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness through advocacy, support, public awareness and education. The organization’s origins reach back to May 1981 when 12 people met to form PROMISE, an acronym for “Parents and Relatives of the Mentally Ill Supporting Each other.” By 1984, PROMISE had grown to include a Board of Directors with by-laws, incorporation as a nonprofit, and had become a member of NAMI-NYS and the national NAMI organization. Eventually the name was changed to NAMI-PROMISE and now operates as NAMI Syracuse. Today, NAMI Syracuse is a nonprofit advocacy organization focused on helping the Central New York community.

In the last year, NAMI Syracuse has championed, promoted and brought back multiple programs. This includes free peer support for first responders; mental health curriculums to be used in middle schools; a comprehensive workplace initiative that promotes mental health support; a free educational program for those close to military servicemembers and veterans with mental health conditions; and mental health awareness sessions for middle and high school students.

NAMI Syracuse is preparing for its 32nd annual conference this September. The community-focused conference brings individuals, families, community leaders, healthcare providers and mental health organizations together to explore how everyone can leverage a more supportive and connected community for everyone. This year’s conference will take place at the DoubleTree by Hilton off Carrier Circle, a new location to accommodate the conference’s growth.
