AmeriCU Credit Union Celebrates 70Years of Service

Posted on October 25, 2020

ROME, NY – october 22, 2020: AmeriCU Credit Union recently celebrated its 70th anniversary as a financial institution serving nine counties across Central and Northern New York.

“AmeriCU is proud to be a part of our community since 1950,” said Ron Belle, President and CEO of AmeriCU Credit Union. “We owe our longevity to our members and we thank you for allowing us to be your trusted financial partner for the past 70 years.”

To commemorate the occasion, the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce presented a congratulatory certificate to Belle, in recognition of the credit union’s 70th year in business and for being a long-time member of the Chamber.

“AmeriCU is very involved in supporting the business community and is an active partner in the Chamber’s ongoing effort to keep the Rome economy sound and growing,” said Adam Hovak, Chairman of the Board of the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce. “The expertise and experience offered by AmeriCU representatives who work within the board of directors and committee structure of the Chamber add immeasurably to the credibility and success of our organization.”

AmeriCU Credit Union’s story began in 1950, when a few civilian employees of Griffiss Air Force Base threw $68 on the table and formed the formerly named Griffiss Employees Credit Union. Since those humble beginnings, AmeriCU Credit Union has grown to be among the top 2% of credit unions in the country, serving more than 140,000 members and growing to $2 billion in assets. Although the credit union has grown, AmeriCU has stayed true to their roots as a community-based, not-for-profit financial cooperative.

In honor of the remarkable milestone, AmeriCU employees ‘turned back time’ with a 1950s style celebration. AmeriCU members enjoyed classic 1950s giveaways such as yoyos, gumballs, and sock-hop themed magnets. Members and the community were also invited to participate in AmeriCU’s social media contests for a chance to win a variety of retro prizes.
