Celebrating Student Achievement in the Micron-related Electromechanical Technology Program

WHEN: Thursday, May 15, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Media can come any time within that 2-hour window to speak with students and faculty.

WHERE: Gordon Student Center Great Room, Onondaga Community College campus, 4585 West Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse. Park in lot 13 in front of the SRC Arena. On the attached campus map, the Gordon Student Center is denoted with a “G.”

WHAT: Onondaga Community College will celebrate the accomplishments of students enrolled in its Electromechanical Technology (ELM) program. The ELM program was created in response to Micron Technology’s decision to build a chip fabrication plant in Onondaga County. OCC welcomed its first group of ELM students in the fall 2023 semester. This Saturday, the first group of students who completed the program will receive their degrees.

During Thursday’s event, faculty in OCC’s School of Technology, Engineering & Computing will:

  • Celebrate the inaugural ELM degree (2-year) graduates. Several were selected for paid internships at Micron in the summer of 2024. Some will return there to work following commencement.
  • Celebrate the 2025 ELM certificate (1-year) graduates.
  • Celebrate our second group of students selected for paid internships at Micron this summer (we have 8).
  • Celebrate our students selected for paid internships as part of NY-CREATE. We have 5 students who will be working and learning at the Albany Nanotech complex this summer.
  • Showcase the coursework and select hands-on activities students worked on throughout the past 2 years.
  • Highlight the diverse group of instructors needed to deliver this program. The roster includes 27 unique instructors, 17 of whom were adjuncts from industry.
  • Connect with Industry Partners who may be interested in learning more about the ELM program.

Media is welcome any time within the 4pm to 6pm window.

Onondaga Community College, Central New York’s partner in education for success, is a two-year college located on a 280-acre campus in Syracuse, NY. OCC is a SUNY (State University of New York) school and is locally sponsored by Onondaga County. We are the first public college in the nation to partner with Barnes & Noble College on the “Box of Books” program which provides students with flat-rate, predictable pricing for textbooks and technology. OCC is recognized nationally as “Military Friendly” and “Best For Vets” for our service to Student Veterans. We are proud partners in education with Micron Technology, and Amazon’s Career Choice Program which gives its employees a tuition-free path to the associate degree of their choosing. Our chapter of international honor society Phi Theta Kappa is repeatedly recognized as the best in New York State and among the highest performing internationally out of nearly 1,300 chapters. A report titled “The Economic Value of Onondaga Community College” shows students enjoy an attractive 21.7% rate of return on their educational investment. For every dollar of support from state and local governments, taxpayers see a return of $7.80 on their investments. OCC’s 20 athletics teams have won 17 national championships.
