This feature of CEO Insights spotlights local companies that are “Economic Champions” because of their success in adding jobs; expanding their products or services; advancing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives; gaining national recognition or contributing to the success of the region in special ways.

Loretto is a leader in comprehensive health care services in Central New York, as the fourth largest health care provider and the sixth largest employer in the region. Across Loretto’s 19 locations, their 2,500 employees deliver care to approximately 10,000 people of all ages, income levels and care needs in Onondaga and Cayuga counties.

CEO Kimberly Townsend was recently named a 2023 Nonprofit Power Player by PoliticsNY & amNY Metro. The Nonprofit Power Players list highlights dedicated nonprofit leaders who are championing causes like accessible education and affordable housing.

Guided by Townsend’s strategic thinking and innovative approach to challenges, Loretto pioneered successful workforce development initiatives to address staffing shortages. The training, mentoring and employee assistance programs helped Loretto to add 350 employees to their ranks in 2023 alone.

“Within the long-term care industry, there is a need for innovation, but there are limited resources. I welcome the challenge of being creative in problem-solving—maximizing the resources available and bringing the most innovative care to Loretto’s residents,” Townsend said.

Innovative programs include Loretto’s Certified Nurse Aide Training Program, the Certified Home Health Aide Training Program, and the first federally recognized Licensed Practical Nurse Apprenticeship Program, which are all paid training opportunities for those who want to begin a career in health care or earn additional certification to advance their careers as Loretto employees.

From adult day programs and short-term rehabilitation to the home-like settings in its assisted living communities and skilled nursing facilities, Loretto is actively investing in its employees, medical research and new technologies to improve care in our community.
