CNY BEST Talent Development Awards
The winners of the 13th Annual CNY BEST Talent Development Awardswere announced at CNY ATD’s CNY BEST Talent Development Awards Ceremony virtual event on Thursday, November 5, 2020.
CNY ATD annually presents the CNY BEST Talent Development Awards to recognize excellence in talent development in the Central New York area. Organizations that link talent development to the strategic growth or success of organizations and individuals are recognized as CNY's BEST in Talent Development.
For 2020, CNY ATD created the CNY BEST Resilience Award to showcase and share our community’s best in dealing with COVID-19 while recognizing excellence in talent development. Organizations were asked to describe their challenges resulting from the pandemic, how they overcame the challenges and what they see as their new normal. Nominees for the CNY BEST Resilience Awards include: AmeriCU Credit Union; Aspen Dental Management Inc.; Battisti Management Affiliates; CenterState CEO; Colgate University; Corning Incorporated; Haylor Freyer & Coon, Inc.; INFICON, Inc.; National Grid; OneGroup; Oneida Nation Enterprises, LLC; Ramboll; Suburban Propane; TDO (Train Develop Optimize); WISE Women's Business Center; and YWCA of Syracuse & Onondaga Co. Inc.
A panel of local judges representing the talent development profession and the community evaluated the CNY BEST Resilience Award nominations for quality of talent development solutions to organization challenges. The distinguished panel of judges for the CNY BEST Resilience Awards included: Deborah Fiorini, Empower Federal Credit Union; David M. Goodness, Workforce Development Institute; Louise C. Hand, SHRM-SCP, Saab, Inc. and President, CNY SHRM; Theresa Jalowiec, SHRM-SCP, Northland Communications; Melissa McLean, Oracle and President Elect, CNY ATD; Debbie Morello, Morello & Associates; Joanne Rauch, CR Fletcher Associates; and Stacy Ward, Elmira Savings Bank.
CNY BEST Talent Development Resilience Gold Award – National Grid
National Grid was recognized withthe CNY BEST Talent Development Resilience Gold Award for linking talent development to their organization’s COVID-19 challenges with its Digital Learning Transformation. National Grid’s pandemic challenge was providing required annual training and qualifications or certifications to operate in compliance and still safely serve the needs of employees and customers. The company implemented a Digital Learning Transformation plan that increased online and distance learning including COVID-19 safety protocols, mobile-ready eLearnings and online pre-assessments, redesigns of instructor-led training courses to virtual instructor-led training, courses to teach better use of virtual platforms and best practices, virtual format train-the-trainer classes to help instructional staff better navigate their strategies and methodologies to a virtual environment, and a new Annual Regulatory Training video-based training library. The increase in online and distance learning, from 17% to 54%, resulted in a savings of over $250,000 in travel costs alone.
The Digital Learning Transformation that was started will continue to grow. As a hands-on company, there will always be a necessity to teach field employees how to use the tools and equipment they use in the field. But where topics can be identified that do not require the hands-on touch, the Digital Learning Transformation will continue to rise. Judges commented on the innovation shown to reduce hands-on compliance training with impressive results.
CNY BEST Talent Development Resilience Diamond Award – Corning Incorporated
Corning Incorporated was honored with the CNY BEST Talent Development Resilience Diamond Award for linking talent development to their organization’s COVID-19 challenges with its Learning from Home Newsletter. The challenge Corning faced was making effective use of the workday for employees who could not work in the laboratories and pilot process lines due to the pandemic. Senior leadership decided to prioritize operational and administrative objectives for employees working from home. The company’s workforce was encouraged to write-up experiments, organize documents and most importantly, learn! A newsletter series called “Learning from Home” curated and highlighted webinar and eLearning resources for increasing technical understanding, professional growth and personal effectiveness, and resources for families searching for ways to pass the time during quarantine. One learning opportunity of community collaboration, curation and distribution with scientists, engineers and professors sharing their time and expertise for a glass science series ran daily over five weeks and drew over 300 attendees.
Corning is continuing to distribute the newsletter, now just called “Learning” and has built a collaborative, self-service website that will function as a training catalogue and repository of past curated learning content and offerings to strengthen the community learning culture. Judges commended Corning for a clever, responsive learning solution to the pandemic challenge that has led to an impactful boost to the strategic learning culture for the company.
CNY BEST Talent Development Resilience Pearl Award - OneGroup
OneGroup was presented with CNY BEST Talent Development Resilience Pearl Award for linking talent development to their organization’s COVID-19 challenges with its OneJourney Orientation Goes Virtual! Program. OneGroup faced the challenge of revamping a fully in-person and collaborative new team member orientation that largely relied on the company’s collaborative culture. The firm translated all-day face-to-face orientation days into virtual sessions that are much shorter in time frame and spread out over a longer period of time while still providing the team with the tools they need to be most successful as a member of OneGroup. They developed virtual collaboration with introductions, conversations and meet and greet sessions with Culture Ambassadors, CEO, various department heads, team members, business support team members and mentors. Building these relationships allows team members to feel that they have the full support of other more seasoned team members to contact should they need anything.
OneGroup will continue to provide training and development solutions to team members in a virtual environment where they can grow and develop skills in a productive manner, all while still providing the interaction and collaboration that is craved. Judges stated, “OneGroup showed that a collaborative culture with interactions can be done virtually.”
In addition to recognizing excellence in talent development practices, CNY ATD and CNY ATD members were acknowledged for national and local recognitions, and CNY ATD Scholarship Recipients were announced.

Keynote Speaker
The keynote speaker for the CNY BEST Talent Development Awards Ceremony was Robert M. Simpson, President and Chief Executive Officer, CenterState CEO. Rob spoke about CNY’s Resilience and rebuilding following the COVID-19 crisis.
“As we work to rebuild and drive a more robust, inclusive and resilient economy following an unprecedented economic crisis, the vision and leadership of the business community has never been more critical. How we invest in our talent, especially those who have for too long been on the sidelines of progress or those most impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, will make the difference in the pace and stability of that progress. Already, hopeful signs are emerging that Central New York is weathering this crisis better than many of our upstate peers. Our community has always risen above seemingly insurmountable challenges by working together towards a shared vision and so we will do so now. I have never been so hopeful or proud of this community.” – Robert Simpson, President and CEO, CenterState CEO.
